PostSubject: ADD   Fri Aug 22, 2008 8:34 pm

Alright. I've heard from some people that ADD is real and is actually something wrong in the brain and from others that it is just personality. What I want to know is your opinions on the matter and if this can be taken seriously or if ADD is no more than just a hyper kid. Can it be traced? Is there any physical evidence of this disorder?

Good idea for a topic, but who knows, really?
None of us are doctors, and even then, doctors only know what they study.

I've been diagnosed with:
1-ADD
2-Bi-polar disorder
3-Post-traumatic stress disorder/syndrome/whatever
4-Manic Depression
5-Depression
5-Blah Blah Blah

Yes, I do feel like medicine can be a really good thing.
Absolutely.

But there's nothing like giving a ten spot to a bum to relieve guilt and
feelings of unworthiness.
Off-topic a little there, but who cares?
LOL.

Aren't Bipolar, manic depression, and depression the same thing? And those are usually mistaken for ADD. So you're Bipolar with post-traumatic stress disorder. And the stress could just be from the Bipolar.

I think everyone just wants to BLAME SOMEONE or SOMETHING for the reason they are certain ways. I believe there are definetely positives to being able to help those who have an attention span issue, its when we start blaming our problems in life on that that it becomes a problem.

I agree.

and the problem isn't lack of attention sometimes; it's lack of incentive. When kids find out they get special privileges when they act a certain way, they continue acting that way. We are treating kids with ADD and teaching them to fake disorders to get places.

Everyone?
Hm.
Seems a little harsh.
How about some people?

Well, duh.

I don't think it's fair to people who have been "diagnosed" with A.D.D.
to come under harsh criticism from those who have not.
Walk a mile in another man's shoes, use his brain for the same number of years he has, and THEN MAYBE we can suppose we know that a person is
faking it or "can do better" or whatever other judgment we want to throw at him.
People respond differently to different situations, and nobody is the same.
One reaction or behavior may not be the way WE would do it,
but it certainly doesn't mean that we're RIGHT and the other guy is WRONG.
And deciding that we know a person's intentions is totally absurd.
Hey, I do it all the time, but I know it's messed up and sinful.
The way to get someone to sort out their problems and behavioral issues
is to experience it WITH them and offer assistance in any way they need.

I'm absolutely not saying that you're claiming these things, I'm just
making a general statement against trying to figure out someone's motives
and assuming they're not "good".
It's a waste of time.
Doing the work of Jesus in those situations and offering help
is a far better usage of time than "trying to get into someone's head".

Blah, blah...I know.
Lots of typing tonight!

Agreed. In no way am I saying "everyone who has been diagnosed is FAKING" ... it just seems to becoming a POPULAR TREND to have a disorder. It is becoming an epidemic almost with being able to say "well I have ADD just don't expect anymore from me then I can give because I can't control it." Yes, that's fine! Understood! Let's help you! But don't use it as an excuse.

Take the pre-birth test for Down syndrome... you can get a test done to see if you might have a child with special needs... and then they ask you whether or not you want to continue the pregnancy.......... come on!!!!! The next tests are coming! As soon as they can figure out a test for ADD you can bet there will be a bunch of people jumping on the bandwagon for that...

(oh and by the way : I know SEVERAL people who have gotten the test done and told their children would have Downs and they actually were 100% wrong... )
